    The Full Monty by CT

Saturday, April 24, 2010, 03:30 PM EST [General]

Circa 87′-88′, Morristown, New Jersey, I was at the Psycho Skates skateboard Demo near the shop located downtown. My friend Mark was on the Psycho Skates team and they were putting on a demo with Monty Nolder and a few other pros that were rolling through town. Basically it was a jump ramp demo, a runway with a jump ramp at the end that all the dudes in the demo were launching off of. It was cool, I think it might have been the first time I saw pros skating. My friend Mark did a backside 360 Judo Air, that was rad. After the demo we rolled around, or should I say sped around Morristown following Monty Nolder and his friends, trying to keep up. Stopping to session spots, I did some sort of wall ride trick and Monty gave me props, rad. I was so stoked, I think I was 12-13 years old. Shortly after sessioning the spot with the wall we sped away and I lost the group. I got dropped on my skateboard, my fitness was poor, my LT power was not high enough (<- cycling related analogy). I really think I just was not as savy in the "city" style street skating. I was a sheltered kid from some small town in Jersey, used to sessioning at the local elementary school and the small spots around there.

Recently I have been reliving those skateboarding era memories in my mind. They are probably my most fond memories as a kid, something that started to define me as a person. My friend Andrew at the time had a Monty Nolder board that was new, I think made by Tracker, or maybe it was Dan Wilkes, anyhow, he got it signed. I remember he retired it and it was more or less new, I think he had it the last time I knew of, maybe 20 years ago ( ouch). Hope he hung onto it.

Skateboarding back in the 80's, by MP

Friday, January 8, 2010, 04:54 PM EST [General]

There where so many great mini ramps we built and skated back in the late 80's, but there is always that one ramp you wish you could go back in time and skate again. That ramp for me and probably many others was located in Morris Plains NJ about a 10 minute skate from the downtown train station. 30 foot wide 5 ½ foot high, two 7 foot extensions and a spine into another 12 foot mini. Nowadays that isn't very big, but back in the 80's it was huge and we made sure to skate it hard. Big front side tail slides, disaster to smith grind, no handed blunts, huge Ollie stalefish airs, miller flips......the list goes on and on. There where so many really great skaters that hit up that ramp. One of the best sessions was after a Mike V. Psycho Skates demo (Skate shop in Morristown NJ) .....there must have been 80 kids on the ramp along with Mike V. I'll never forget that day and the many great friends I met skating that ramp.

Will Skate to Work, by CT

Tuesday, January 5, 2010, 11:34 PM EST [General]

As life gets more complicated and the years tick on I find that the time I have to skateboard, exercise and do the things that I love to be less and less.  The days of 5 hours curb sessions or spending all day at a pool are fewer and less appealing.  So, I have decided to skate to work once a week,  why?  Well, once I hit 35 things like big ollies and the newest trick became less important and just being on the board, enjoying being outside and riding became more important.  Also, doctor said I need more exercise, cholesterol is not the best.  So, my town, Boulder, Colorado has a really intricate system of mulit-use paths which virtually connect most of the city.  I have my wife drop me off within a few miles of my job and I skate in, it is quiet and peaceful and fast and fun.  I have put together a route that allows me to hit some fun ditches and ollie spots.  1 hour of skating before work!  Sweet.  Most people at my job ride bikes into the office, which I do the other days of the week,  but I find that skating into work really mellows me out for the day and gives me a great start to the day....
